Roy Matthew Smith

Roy Matthew Smith, born on June 21, 1950, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, left this world peacefully on July 11, 2025, surrounded by his beloved family. He lived a life filled with love, laughter, and cherished moments, which will forever be etched in the hearts of those who knew him.

Roy dedicated more than 40 years of his career to the Packaging Corporation of America, where his work ethic and commitment shone brightly. In addition, he shared his amiable personality as a part-time bartender at Chance Bar in Northeast Minneapolis, where many found comfort and camaraderie in his presence.

Roy was not only known for his kindness and quick wit but also for his mesmerizing blue eyes that echoed the charm of Paul Newman. He was the anchor of his family, always ready with sage advice and a warm smile that lit up any room.

Roy's passion for life was evident in the simple joys he cherished. He loved playing cards, often gathering with family and friends for spirited games that fostered connection and joy. Golf was another of his great loves, and he never missed watching the Masters every year, relishing the excitement and challenge it brought. The annual 4th of July family gathering was a highlight of his year; it was filled with laughter, the thrill of meat raffles, countless card games, and jubilant trips to the casino, creating treasured memories that will be fondly remembered.

He leaves behind his devoted wife of 32 years, Maryjo, and his beloved children: Lisa, James, and Lori (Rich) and stepson, Christopher. Together, they carry on his legacy alongside his cherished grandchildren: Amanda (Lucas), Ashley (Matt), Amber, James (Kacia), Haley, and Danielle (Ryan). Roy also had the joy of being a great-grandfather to Christopher and Cayden, whose lives will carry on the love he so generously shared.

Roy is preceded in death by his father, Edward, and mother, Julia, along with his sisters, Lee and Bernadine, his brother, Edward, and stepson, Jason. Their spirits will embrace him as he enters into eternal rest, joining them in peace.

Though Roy Matthew Smith has departed from our sight, his spirit will forever remain alive in the hearts of his family and friends. His love, laughter, and light will continue to inspire and uplift those who had the privilege of knowing him. May his memory be a blessing and a source of comfort to all who grieve his passing.

A Celebration of Life will be held on August 31, 2025 from 1-3 pm at Elsie's - 729 NE Marshall Street, Minneapolis, MN.
